Tradle Unlimited is a free geography guessing game where you identify a country from its export treemap — a colorful chart of everything it sells to the world — with no daily play limit.

The original Tradle was created by the OEC (Observatory of Economic Complexity) as a Wordle-style daily puzzle. It gives you one country per day, six guesses, and a 24-hour wait before the next round — its full backstory is in our what is Tradle explainer.

Tradle Unlimited removes that wait. You can play as many rounds as you like, practice reading trade data, and still solve the official daily puzzle in the same place.

How Tradle Unlimited Differs from the Daily Tradle

The daily version is a shared ritual — everyone in the world solves the same country. Tradle Unlimited is a practice ground: each round draws a new country from 226 real economies, using the same rules and the same trade data.

The distribution chart is quietly the most useful screen in the game. If most of your wins land on guess five or six, you are relying on triangulation alone; when they shift toward guess two or three, it means you have genuinely learned to read the treemaps.

Winning consistently at Tradle Unlimited is a skill, and it comes down to reading the treemap like an economist and triangulating like a navigator.

Recognize Signature Exports

Certain products are near-fingerprints for a region. Learn these first:

Crude Oil and Petroleum

A treemap swallowed by one brown block usually means the Gulf states, Russia, Norway, Nigeria, or Venezuela. Check the block's share — above 80% suggests a smaller petrostate.

Electronics and Machinery

Integrated circuits and machinery dominate East Asian exporters: Chinese Taipei, South Korea, Japan, and China itself. Huge, diversified machine exports with cars attached often mean Germany.

Coffee, Cocoa and Agriculture

Coffee points to Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam, or Ethiopia. Cocoa beans almost always mean Côte d'Ivoire or Ghana, while soybeans suggest Brazil, Argentina, or Paraguay.

Narrow Down by Region First

If the products don't give it away, open with a central country on the most likely continent — Nigeria for Africa, Germany for Europe, Thailand for Asia. The distance and arrow from one good anchor guess usually cuts the candidates to a handful.

Watch the Economy Size

The variety of the treemap hints at scale. A chart with 90+ visible product blocks belongs to a diversified major economy; a chart with five giant blocks is a small or single-resource exporter.

Use the Proximity Percentage, Not Just the Arrow

The arrow tells you the bearing, but the percentage tells you the leap. Each 1% of proximity equals roughly 200 kilometers, so jumping from 85% to 96% means you closed about 2,200 kilometers of the gap.

A practical opener pattern: pick one anchor per hemisphere and stick with it across rounds. Consistent openers make the feedback comparable, and after a week of Tradle Unlimited practice you will read a "6,400km ↗" clue like a postal address.

Both games share identical rules — six guesses, distance, direction, and proximity. The difference is pace and purpose.

Honest advice: keep your daily streak going on the official schedule, and use Tradle Unlimited to get good enough that the streak survives.

06The Trade Data Behind the Game

Every treemap on this site is generated from BACI, the international trade database maintained by CEPII and used by the OEC. It covers about 5,000 products traded between more than 200 economies, harmonized from national customs records.

We aggregate each country's exports into 96 product groups (HS 1992 classification, 2023 data) and render the chart at build time. That's why Tradle Unlimited loads fast and works even on slow connections — each treemap is a lightweight vector image, not a live embed.

Small territories with no meaningful customs records are excluded from the answer pool, so every puzzle you meet is solvable from its chart. The dataset refreshes once a year when the next complete trade year is published, and the answer pool grows with it.
